Krystian and Daniella's Surprise Proposal
For the longest time, I’ve toyed with the idea of starting a blog to highlight the amazing couples I have the privilege of working with. So when Krystain reached out to plan something special for Daniella, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to begin, finally.
There are countless beautiful locations across Trinidad and Tobago to capture moments like these, but Yara Beach holds a special place in my heart. No matter how many times I’ve visited, each session feels unique. I always aim to make every couple feel like they’re the only ones who’ve ever stood in front of my lens at that spot. I’ve photographed at Yara during sunrise, high noon, and golden hour, and each time offers a completely different experience. The beach is always changing, from low tide to high tide, from soft morning light to dramatic evening hues, yet it never loses its magic.
Our session began with something I always cherish—getting to know the couple on a deeper level. Hearing about their journey, how their paths crossed years ago, but the timing just wasn’t right, gave me chills. Now, everything aligned perfectly. #TheInvisibleLineTheory
As we got into the shoot, Krystain casually mentioned that a few friends were “in the area” and decided to tag along. Of course, Daniella thought nothing of it. What she didn’t know was that they were carrying something very special—a certain small box that would change everything. When you're photographing a surprise proposal, timing is everything. It’s a delicate dance between giving direction and reading your client’s cues without tipping anyone off. In moments like this, you almost need to communicate telepathically with the person proposing, adjusting on the fly while keeping things natural and relaxed.
However, as things sometimes go, especially during unexpected moments, the ring was running late. Krystain was discreetly on the phone, trying to coordinate, while I subtly shifted gears. To buy time and avoid raising any suspicion, I invited Daniella to enjoy a solo portrait session. She lit up in front of the camera, completely unaware of what was about to unfold, while Krystain paced just behind me, nervously awaiting the green light.
Then—it arrived. The package was here.
With his hands behind his back and a nervous energy radiating from him, Krystain walked toward Daniella. At that point, I think she had an inkling of what might be happening. You could see the flicker of suspicion in her eyes as she looked at him, perhaps wondering if this was the moment.
But then came the twist.
He handed her the gift—beautifully wrapped—and as she opened it, her face lit up with joy. It was The Jahlisa by Alora, a bag she had mentioned wanting for the longest time. And just like that, any thoughts of a proposal seemed to melt away. The bag completely stole the spotlight, if only for a moment.
That misdirection? Absolutely intentional.
But nothing could have prepared her for what came next.
As she admired the bag, turning it over with a smile and soaking in the thoughtful gesture, there was a brief pause; she glimpsed a box tucked away inside the bag. And then, in a split second, everything changed.
It hit her.
She wasn’t just there to look cute and receive a long-desired gift. She was standing in the middle of a moment that would redefine the rest of her life.
Because just then, Krystain dropped to one knee and asked the question that every heartbeat had been building toward:
"Will you marry me?"
